The Emperor

As the fourth major arcana, The Emperor is like any four-sided object; no longer in movement but stable resting on one side. He/she is the peak of worldly power but because this card comes so early on in the adventure through the Tarot’s Major Arcana, it’s not perfection or completion. His power is tenuous (can you be sure his chair has all four legs?) and it comes from the past (the left side of the card). To transcend and see beyond the status of Emperor, we’ll have to look to the future rather than focus on illusory ‘power’ granted through title or birthright. To be Emperor is still an accomplishment but liberation requires you to see beyond the worldly, temporary successes to even loftier goals.

Johnny Thunders was the electrifying guitars of proto-punk band, The New York Dolls. Despite modest budgets, they dress flamboyantly and were the epitome of rock ’n roll decadence. Their unbridled chaotic lives gave a sense of danger to their performances of catchy, sexy pop songs. At the center of this storm were Johnny’s rollicking riffs and blistering solos. He appears as Emperor because he stands atop that delicate balance of beauty and debauchery; purity and filth. If we took either one of those away, he wouldn’t be Johnny Thunders and he wouldn’t be Emperor.
