Strength

The Strength card is traditionally a female figure gently holding a lion's jaw open. This should be a moment full of action and violence but instead, the two are still and stable; unmoving. If the figure used the violence of the lion to tame the lion, there would only be the violence we expect. Instead she gently holds it to subdue the danger rather than destroy it. Every life is dealt its share of suffering and no one is exempt; how we choose to live through them is how we grow. The Strength card is grace under pressure; calming the mind to see the path through danger clearly.

Joan Jett, legendary female guitarist of the Runaways and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, is strength personified. She's been honoured as one of the 100 Greatest All Time Guitarists by Rolling Stone Magazine as well as inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Her forceful personality comes through clearly in her art; in the electrifying guitar riffs and rocking songs that had more of the aggression and verve associated with her male counterparts. Joan Jett transformed and harnessed the parts of herself that should have held her back into her art in a way that enabled her to triumph above them all. What we think holds us back, when tamed can set us free.
